The Matagi cardigan is a very memorable design for me personally. I first knitted this cardigan in 2019. It was a cardigan that I knitted freely using my own handspun yarn. At the time, I was on sick leave due to a chronic illness and was having a really difficult time. I could maintain my sanity because of knitting. I knitted a lot of Matagui cardigans as a way to sort out my feelings that I couldn't put into words.
Initially, I didn't intend to write a pattern for this garment. So I did not keep a detailed record of each piece I knitted. I was just having fun, using handspun or/and store-bought yarn. Each piece has a different meaning to me, and I'm sure I overcame the difficult time by knitting Matagui.
They told me so many things about myself and about life.
I've been requested to write a pattern countless times, and there are several reasons why it took me this long to release a pattern.
Firstly, I thought it was too simple and too easy that did not worth to be written. Secondly, I couldn't choose the "best" yarn to knit this cardigan. Lastly, this cardigan has too much sentimental value to me, and I needed some time to process my feelings.
I've been showcasing all the Matagui cardigans I knitted on Instagram, and I received so much love and support from you all. I feel like I am finally ready to let my obsession go. It is no longer "my Matagui", it is now "your Matagui" too. And it is time for you to build a special bond with this special piece.
Please feel free to mix and match your favorite yarns. And if you can, I would love to see what you have knitted on Ravelry or/and Instagram. I would be happy if you could tell me your feedback too.
I hope you have fun knitting your Matagi cardigan!
Sincerely,
Maysa
